More Must Be Known About Our Fish

MINISTER STRESSES NEED FOR RESEARCH Per Press Association. ROTORUA, Last Night. The opinion that scientific research was urgently required to maintain New Zealand’s fisheries both salt water and fresh, was expressed by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. W. E. Parry) in the course of an interview before hi* departure from Rotorua on Saturday. The Minister mentioned that the Government had decided to make fish research a State activity and said that the work would be closely prosecuted. He had gone very thoroughly into the position of the country’s fisheries and he was satisfied New Zealand had exhausted its knowledge of its salt water and fresh fish. As an instance he had found no set of anglers whose views were alike when asked for opinions regarding the improvement of fresh water fishing. He was satisfied that an intense research was now necessary to guide the authorities in the proper development of the fisheries. The Fish Research Department established by the Government was working well and would, he felt, be of great value to the country. It would be a calamity if New Zealand’s fishing deteriorated.
