Wyatt Strikes Form at Last

COMBINED TEAM’S SORRY SHOWING United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Sunday, 9.20 p.m. HOBART, Jan. 18. England’s innings lasted only a further 23 minutes to-day but sufficient to see Hardstaff reach 110 in 134 minutes, scoring his first century of tho tour. He batted more like the Hardstaff of last summer in Australia when he was the most successful batsman in the team. He hit ten fours and three sixes and threw his wicket away. England were all out for 418.

Light rain fell during the adjournment making tho wicket fiery and so providing Fames and Copson with an opportunity which they were not slow to grasp. The wickets fell quickly, Badcock being tricked by an outswinger which he edged to point before he had scored.

Three wickets were down for 14 at lunch and shortly after seven for 48. Walsh held his end up but it was Oldfield who saved the side from complete disaster with a splendid innings of sixty not out in 87 minutes, a valuable practice knock for the tests.

With the combined team out for 134 England could have enforced a follow on but preferred to give the record crowd of 11,000 a batting exhibition. Wyatt, who had his last chance to justify his test selection, opened with Fishlock, scoring 20 before his partner opened his account. He apparently found his wrist no inconvenience for he drove and pulled vigorously, hitting seven four in his first fifty in even time. At stumps he was 68 not out. Fishlock used his feet nicely when facing Grimmett but was trapped by an offdrive and caught by Badcock near the fence. England with one for 111 were 395 in the lead at stumps. Scores:— ENGLAND.
