Vines defeated Perry, 6—3, 5 —7, i —4, 6 —l. Except in the second set the American displayed decided superiority. Vines took & 3 —2 lead in the first when he broke through Perry’s service, and won the set. The ninth game was hard fought going to douce four times before Perry’s outing gave the American victory. Vines was threatened once in the second set at the eleventh game when he deuced Perry's service but the Englishman was never endangered, accounting for the American’s service finally to take the set. An incident in the tenth and deciding game annoyed the usually calm Perry. There was a rush of general admission spectators on to the court directly at the back of him which caused him to halt play until the attendants blocked the stampede. Vines is one match ahead on all encounters with Perry. The American won the first four amateur matches, lost the fifth and then lost the first three professional matches.
