Hundreds of dwellers ou the lowlands of 1 lie Middle West fled before the steady advance of flood waters as a result of one of the rainiest and mildest winters in history. The forecast for lair and colder weather nt the week-end ■ cheered the refugees since it is elpeeted this will check tho swift rise of the overburdened streams in the Ohio and -Mississippi valleys. Considerable distress and damage are reported. Officials of .lay County, Indiana, called the conditions the worst since J 913. Kailway and inter-urban traffic are disrupted in that State and many thousands of acres are inundated. Missouri, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tenessee reported the same state of affairs. The centres of Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Memphis report high river stages with flood levels dangerously near.
