Earthquake’s Legacy to Napier

7500 ACRES OF SEABED. Per Press Association. HASTINGS, Last Night. An area of approximately 7500 acres iu the vicinity of Napier which was freed from sea water as a result of the 1931 earthquake is expected to be available for cultivation next year. The problem confronting the Public Works and Agricultural Department’s officers is the removal of the salt from the former seabed but the pumping and installation of an extensive drainage system has done much in this direction. Parts have already been ploughed and planted but these are mostly experimental patches and the major area of the block still requires further drainage.
