Women’s Institutes

HAMUA Boisterous weather failed to prevent a good attendance from, enjoying themselves at the sixth birthday of the Hamua W. I. held in the Hamua Hall on November 13. The golf club had kindly left the decorations from their ball and visitors wero present from Mangatainoka, Malcuri, Mangamaire, Ilukanui, Kaitawa and Pahiatua W. I’s. Mrs Gordon Smith made an efficient M.C. and kept tho dances going to music supplied by Mr Peter Jackson, extras being contributed by Mrs R. Honry and Mr H. Wiskor. A play entitled “Three Times Topped’’ was given by the play reading circle, those taking part being Misses I. Cavanagh, I. Davies, J. Sorenson, L. Udy, M. and I. Bailey and J. Ryan. After this item a pleasing little episode was the presentation by Miss L. Udy, on behalf of the play reading circle, of a box of chocolates and posy to Miss McLaughlin, the producer, in appreciation of the time and troublo she takes with tho circle the crowd all joining in musical honours. The next, item was club swinging by Misses M. and 1. Bailey, I. and M. Davies and J. Smith, to music supplied by Mrs R. Henry. The last item was a song and encore by Mrs Coulter or Mangamaire, accompanied by Mrs Twentyman, of Hukanui. After a savoury supper supplied by the members, Mrs Hobbs (president,) who was presented with a posy by Mrs Bailey, welcomed all visitors and then presented Mesdames W. J. Smith and Davies, vice presidents and Miss Joy Smith, secretary, with shoulder sprays and thanked the rest of her committee for the help they had given during the year. Mrs Hobbs then called on Mrs Ross, president of Mangatainoka W. I. to light- the six candles on the birthday cake which wore blown out by tho Misses Austin, Pahiatua. Mrs Hobbs cut the cake which was kindly made by Mrs George Smith and beautifully iced by Mrs R. Cavanagh. A craft stall was on exhibition and the points prize competition for the prettiest article not costing more than Is 6d. was won by Mrs Davies with a child’s floral smocked frock and Mrs Humphreys with an organdie toilet set, second, the judges ( being Mesdames Watkins and Gardiner, ' Hukanui W. I. and Mrs Swanney Kai--1 tawa W. I. Tho competition for Decem- | ber is a jar of flowers.

RANGIOTU. The monthly meeting was held on Wednesday evening, when despite the stormy conditions prevailing, there was a very good attendance. Mrs Beard 'presided in the absence of the president, Mrs Pearce. Motions of sympathy with Mrs Pearce and tho Misses Nora, Sheila and Patricia Croad, who have recently suffered bereavements, were passed. It was agreed to hold the Christmas tree party on December 17. Fancy dress is to be optional. The headmaster of the school, Mr Wilkinson, and his assistant, Miss Arlidge, have kindly consented to take charge of the floor, and a programme of organised games, dancing and competitions, interspersed with individual items by the children, will provide pleasant entertainment until Father Christmas arrives. The children are to be given a sit-down supper and members are reminded to bring a generous plate of cakes. Mrs Russell presented a very comprehensive report of the half-yearly council meeting held at Palmerston North and was warmly thanked. A quantity of reading matter was brought along by members, and it was to send it, together with a box of children’s knitted garments, to the Women’s Hospital Auxiliary. It was decided to hold tho January meeting in the evening and tho annual picnic will take the place of the February meeting. Tho monthly competition, best Christmas gift, cost not to exceed 2s 6d, was won by Mr 3 Buchanan, with Miss Ada Gimblott second and Mrs Beard third. There was an exceptionally large number of entries. The competition for the best dressed doll for the Christmas tree was also keenly competed for, the entries being most attractive, and the judge, Miss Moffatt, haa no enviable task. The winners were:—Knitted garments, Mrs Baker; best dressed doll, Mrs H. Walker. Miss Marie Moffatt, of Awapuni, then delighted everyone with a travel talk, giving vivid impressions of her experiences whilst studying in London and on the Continent. Miss Moffatt was warmly thanked for her interesting talk and kindly consented to give another talk at a later date. Supper was served by tho hostesses, Mesdames Andrew and Baker and Miss Dixon. A new member, Miss Audrey Couchman, was welcomed.

KOPANE. The monthly meeting of the Ixopane Women's Institute was held at Mrs. Hendle’s house on Wednesday, December 2, Mrs. Salt presiding over a good attendance. Arrangements were made for the picnic to be held on January 27 in the bush by Mrs. Salt’s house. It was decided to enter for the Peilding A. and P. Association’s competition. Miss Slyiield very kindly came and demonstrated smocking and showed members some beautiful examples of finished articles. The competition for the best frock not to cost more than' 7s 6d was won by Mrs. Jones, with Mrs. Dawbin second and Mrs. L. Boddy third, Miss Slyfield and Mrs. Hornblow acting as judges.
