Obituary

MRS. JANE COX. Tlie death occurred in the Dannevirko Hospital on Saturday at the ripe ago of 1 90 years of a very widely known and popular resident of the town, Mrs. Jane Cox, who had lived there for over 40 years'. ‘ Deceased, who had been in failing health since August last, was born at Mortimer,- Berks, England, on June 7, 1846. Her marriage to Caleb Cox took place at Hounslow, Middlesex, when she was 20 years old, and eight years later Mr. and Mrs. Cox and their three sons set sail for drew Zealand, eventually landing at Lyttelton. After living at the Cust (Canterbury), Maryborough and Wellington, Mr. and Mrs. Cox went to Dannevirke, between 40 and 42 years ago. In 1920 they celebrated the diamond jubilee of their wedding. Mr. Cox died the next year and since then Mrs. Cox had been cared for by her only relative, a niece, Miss A. Whitburn. Mrs. Cox followed a nursing career until about 1920. In June of this year she celebrated the ninetieth anniversary of her birthday, when she was the recipient of numerous congratulations. Deceased attributed her longevity to hard work and reasonable care, having always been industrious and active. She had been an unselfish helper for years and her passing will bo regretted by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, Late Mrs Pawson. The late Mrs. Pawson, who -was killed when tho car in which she was a passenger, collided rvith a train at Palmerston North on Sunday, was tho third daughter of tho late Mr. and Mrs. D. Johnstone, of Raumati. She was born at Taradale and went to Raumati with her parents 27 years ago. Mrs. Pawson was well-known in that district, where she had spent most of nor life, and her gentlo disposition endeared her to all who were acquainted with her. Sho was a popular member of tho Raumati Women’s Institute. Besides the husband and two children—Margaret, aged 20 months, and Bruce, aged five years—tho deceased lady leaves six sisters and four brothers, as follows: Alesdames J. Lang (Makotuku), W. McMillan (Umutaoroa), A. Bricksen (Peatherston), H. Campin (Hamilton), J. Barnett (Carterton), G. Osborne (MorrinSville), and Messrs. J. Johnstone (Whangarei), David Johnstone (To Rehunga), Thomas Johnstone (Raumati), and Hector Johnstone (Tiratu).
