DAIRY FARMER’S CHEQUE IN NEW SOUTH WALES EFFECT OF DRY WEATHER • NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 3. Behind the bare cabled statement that tho dairy industry in New South Wales is seriously affected by the severe drought lie many tales of great individual hardship. Compared with the conditions being suffered there at present, Taranaki farmers have little to complain of. They may have their mortgago troubles and thpi’- rising costa, but at Least they have tne messing ox abundant rain. Letters received at New Plymouth yesterday eoniirm the situation described in the cable. “The weather over here has been very changeable, hot one day and cold as the poles the next,’ ’ wrote a Sydney man. “It is still very dry and the only thing selling here will be irrigation plants. It is a great pity wo cannot get some of your floods over here. Strong winds make tho situation worse.’’
The Press Association message referred to, stated that cream and butter production in northern coastal districts had fallen by half. That announcement did not surprise a New Plymouth man, who recently returned from Australia. During August, he said yesterday, only 000 out of 75(3 suppliers were able to send milk to a factory in the Grafton district and the average value of their cheques for the month was only £3. In New Zealand a dairyman reckoned to make £3O or £4O a month from 40 cows, but at Ettrick, New South Wales, near the Queensland border, there was a farmer whose September chequo from a liercd of that size was no more than £5. There wore bush fires in many districts and tho pasture was burned bare of feed. As much as £8 a ton was being paid for lucerne.
Another disastrous result of the drought was observed in tho Bulli Pass district, where 1,000,000 strawberry plants produced only seven chips of shrivelled fruit on one day during October. The only green country seen by the visitor from New Plymouth was south of Woollongong, where the laud was watered by irrigation schemes and artesian wells.
