Violent Explosion Of Fire Extinguisher
EIRE BOARD PERTURBED. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. A violent explosion of a cone type of lire extinguisher tested to withstand a pressure of 3501 b. to the square inch after it had been used at a fire on premises in the city on October 21 gave rise to a serious discussion by the Christchurch Firo Board to-night. Tie superintendent’s report referred to the incident. A man laid down tho extinguisher thinking it was empty and it blew up to the ceiling and burst. Many such extinguishers were in buildings everywhere and few had been serviced since they were purchased. The man who handled this particular extinguisher might have beeu seriously hurt and even killed. Unless this class of extinguisher was periodically attended to it could not be relied upon to give prolection against firo. One suggestion made by a member of the board (o discourage the use of inefficient extinguishers was that the insurance rebate be discontinued. However, it was agreed that the board should encourage their use but should emphasise tho necessity for appliances being regularly serviced.
