Trolling Club s Venture

POPULARISINtr THE SPuRT. GOOD FARE AT AWAPUNI ON LABOUR DAI. (By “ Abaydos. In spite oi troiung meetings at aucitlanu, ureymuutu uuu uaiuaru on Laoour Bay, tue entries reeeiveu lor tiie iuana watu Cluo's lixture on tne same proves tne popularity ox tue raimeiston i\orth organisation, and also tnai there aro suuicient noises offering in and around tno province to make interesting nobis ana good racing. The response from owners anu trainers is well merited as tne xuanawatu Trotting Cluo nas maiutaineu a boid iront lor many seasons and itept tne nag dying in racing many dilneulties, especially uurmg tne ponou ox depression. Tne last xew years tne cluo nas come into its own to suen an extent tnat it is now entitled to extra permits. Since the meetings nave tanen place at Awapuni, wnere tue tracn and appointments aro admirably suitable lor the. presentation of trotting races, the public of the district have witnessed many thrilling and spectacular races, and it is a lino tribute to the efforts and enterprise of the well managed organisation that at the conclusion of last year's very successful two-day meeting tnere was a general demand for more. The Manawatu public nave deliniteiy become trotting minded, and this nas been brought about by the capable manner in which the local club has catered for its patrons. Increased Enthusiasm. There has been increasing enthusiasm iu recent years at trotting iunctions in Palmerston North and had the club been fortunate enough to race at Awapuni during tho period it was operating at Ashhurst, its position to-day would have been equal to many ol the larger clubs. However, having turned the corner, tho management is leaving no stone unturned to give its patrons every facility to whet its appetite for more good trotting, and the decision to race on Labour Day, is entirely in the public interest. Being a holiday, there should be a record attendance at the coming meeting, when contests fitting to tho occasion can be looked for. Whilo there are many young and maiden horses listed, the majority are not unknown at Manawatu meetings, and the fields contain a good number who raced prominently lust year. April Contests Recalled. Tho thousands who cneered with delight at the great Cup finish will remember the iiual dash of Rayon d’Or, when F. J. Smith got him homo from the favourite, Treasure Bond, with Roelcella third, and they will not have forgotten how the second day Roekella turned tho tables on tho Cup winner in both the Louisson and Farewell Handicaps, and thus won Ihe Evans Challenge Cup. The name of Belinda King will revive memories of tho line reinsmanship of Garry Garnett in scoring narrowly from Rare Rcy in the President's Handicap. Tho wonderful trotting exhibition of Arapai, the consistency of ►Silk Cord, the success of Kraal, Activity and Roadster, are other points to revive keen interest. With the exception of Treasure Bond, who is tackling big iisk at Epsom, all the horses referred to are again carded for Awapuni, and they will make the racing thrilling. Then thero is tho local trotter, Franz Derby, who having her first race ran second to Tecla. But how has A. G. FarJand's marc improved? Her next appearance was at Hamilton tv hero she won iu line style. Two unsuccessful efforts at Epsom in the mud followed, but this season she recorded a first and third at Cambridge and going to Wellington won a double. Another trotter of note is the Longburn-owncd King’s Guard, who after a lengthy absence signalled his return by a win in the south.

The appearance of Llewellyn’s Pet and Effie Parrish will add to the attractiveness of some of the races, to say nothing cf the Ashliurst successful candidates, Electric Beil and Baron Grand.
