Second Day’s Play in Ladies’ Golf Tournament

Semi-Finalists are Miss Heleao, Mrs Field, Miss Homabrook and Miss Wilson Many Good Rounds Recorded Under Boisterous Conditions The Manawatu ladles’ golf championships were continued at Hokowhitu yesterday. The weather, except l'or driving ram before noon, was fine, but a strong breeze which was gusty at times made a very trying day of it for most of the players. The course was drier than on Tuesday and the fairways a littlo faster. Some good rounds were recorded during the day and tho semi-finalists for the Manawatu open championship are Miss Hclean, of Seaiield, who meets Mrs. J. r. Field, of Manawatu, and Miss Homabrook, of Masterton, who plays Miss Wilson, of Rangitikei. The semi-finals will be played this morning and the final this afternoon.

■ Results of Yesterday’s Play. Results of tho second'day’s play are as under: — Manawatu Open Championship. First Round. Miss P. Heleau (Heafield) beat Mrs. D. V. Stewart (Manawatul, 4 and 3. Mrs. J. S. Colcgrovo (Middlemore) beat Miss M. Illsion (Manawatu), 4 and 3. Mrs. J. F. Held (Mauawati, beat Miss Fullerton-Smith (Marton), 5 and 4. Miss I. Seifert (Fcilding) beat Miss Fat Bell (Seafield), 9 and 7. Miss J. Homabrook (Masterton) beat Mrs. L. F. Speeckley (Manaw’atu), 3 and 2.

Miss E. Bell (Heretaunga) beat Miss N. Noakes (Middlemore), 3 and 2. Miss J. Duncan (Wanganui) beat Miss M. Guy (Manawatu), G and 5. Miss C. Wilson (Rangitikei) beat Mrs. Power (Wanganui), 5 and 3.

Second Round. Miss Helean beat Mrs. Colegrove, 6 and 5. Mrs. Field beat Miss Seifert, 3 and 2. Miss Homabrook beat Miss E. Bell, 2 up. Miss Wilson beat Miss Duncan, 4 and 3. Hokowliitu Handicap.

Comment on the Play. Miss Seifert, who was playing Miss Pat-Bell, of Seafield, in the first round of the championship, was rignt on her game from tho outset and she reached the turn in 39 despite a 6 at Riverside. Her card read: Out: 54535564 2—39 In: 45464564 5—43 Total 82 Miss C. Wilson, who was opposed to Mrs. Power, of Wanganui, mado few mistakes in a round of So off the stick, and she returned a net 78, her card reading: Out: 5553G653 3—41 In: 65465454 5—44 Total »5 Playing against Mrs. J. S. Colegrove, of Middlemore, in the second round of tho championship, Miss P. Helean, of Seafield, proved much too strong for her opponent, who had difficulty in holding her iron shots on to tho line, and who was handicapped by a succession of bad lies. Miss Helean slipped two or three strokes at Riverside where her second, following a long drive which finished in tho rough, caught the trees, and she required 7 for tho hole. She was out in 42, her figures being: 4553557 44. Coming in sho recorded a brilliant eagle, 3 at Ti Ti’s where, from the men’s tee, her drive went past the island bunker. In tho bogey handicap, played in the afternoon, Miss 8. Collins, a 17-handicap player from Featherston, recorded an S 7 off the stick lo finish 2 down on bogey.

Mrs. P. G. Tizard (Manawatu) beat Mrs. W. E. Birch (Masterton), 2 and 1. Miss Ballantyno (Middlemore) beat Mrs. S. Foreman (Miramar) at the nineteenth.

Second Hound. Mrs. Broderick beat Miss Garner, 3 and 2. Mrs. Young beat Miss Todd at the nineteenth, Mrs. Paterson beat Mrs. Drew, 2 and 1. Miss Ballantyne beat Mrs. Tizard, 7 and 6.

Mrs. Field scored a meritorious wm over Miss Seifert in the second round of the championship. She had established a 2-up lead before turning for home and she increased this with a win at tho eleventh..- Miss Seifert won the fifteenth but Mrs. Field clinched tho game by taking the next. Mrs. Field was out in 41 and her card would have been two strokes better but for a couple of stymies. She was back in 42 to record an S3 —great golf. The figures were:

The issue was very much in doubt at tho seventeenth where Miss Hornabrook had to negotiate a half-stymie. One up going to the eighteenth, her third was 12 feet short and sho ran down the putt for the hole and tho match 2 up. Miss Boll’s short game, was not as good as it might have been and this made ail tho difference to her chances.

i Second rcound. Airs. Stanford beat Airs. Alonkman. Miss Rutledge beat Airs. Grut, 1 up. Aliss Collins beat Aliss Cochran, 3 and 2. Airs. Tale beat; Airs. Whitehead, 3 and 2. Third Medal Handicap. The third medal handicap was played in tho morning and tho players had to contend with driving rain for about an hour. Tho A grade division was won by Miss I. Seifert, from Foilding, who, with an S2 off the stick and a handicap of 5, returned a net 77—a good effort under the conditions, The B grade was won by Airs. Leonard, from ( Alarton, with a net 73,

Playing against Miss Guy in the first round of the Hokowhitu handicap, Miss Pat Bell recorded an 85 off the stick with a 6 at tho eighteenth. In the same, handicap Miss M. Illston was round in 85 off tno stick to beat Miss Fullerton-Smith. With four holes still to play Miss Illston required 4’s for an 80.
