MEETING OF DRAINAGE BOARD
Present at yesterday’s meeting of tho Malcerua Drainago Board were Trustees 11. Seifert • (chairman), E. E. Mabin, IV. Jackson, J. D. Aitchison, G. Larsen and T. D. Lynch. Trustee IV. J. Ross, who is in hospital, was granted leave of absence and is to bo sent a letter wishing him a speedy recovery. Overseer’s Report. Tho Board's foreman (Mr. P. V. Tucker) reported as follows: —“Work authorised to be done at Kemp’s bend has been carried out. Three small groynes were placed in river, the fence extended a further 14 chains upstream, and willows planted over this area; 400 macrocarpa trees wero also plauted at Komp’s, including ISO replacements. The replanting of Williams’ and Allwright’s macrocarpa plantations has also been attended to. The planting of willows at Allwright’s bend where neeccssary is now in progress. The old Main drain has been cleaned from Intersecting channel to Sands’ drain and a start has been mado with the deepening from Campbell’s drain to Sands’ drain. Tho Okuku pump burnt out a coil on the 12th ultimo while pumping against a 17 inch head. The coil has been rewound and will be replaced to morrow. Akers’ drain south of the intersecting channel requires cleaning for approximately 30 chains from channel to allow the free flow of water.” The clerk (Mr. N. I. Nielsen) reported an overdraft of £5279 7s. The overdraft limit was £10,047. The total outstanding rates for the tlireo years 193336 amounted to £1928 7s Id. Tho Treasury advised that inquiries wero being made on behalf of the Board with the view of assisting in raising privately the .£5,000 flood loan and as soon as information was available, the board would be advised. Tho board’s decision to hypothecate tho debentures with tho bank at 4J per cent., as a temporary arrangement, was noted. The board decided to proceed with the taking of a poll on November 11, of the ratepayers in connection with the proposal to raise a loan of £I2OO for drain improvements. Polling booths will be arranged at Shannon, Opiki and the Board’s office in Palmerston North. The matter of raising tho stopbank at Poplar mill was held over for further consideration in January. The chairman reported that tho job was not a big one. It was decided to get the Board's motor truck overhauled.
The question of deepening the top end of Seifert’s drain was left to the chairman to arrange for. It was decided to dispose of buckets and spare parts of the floating dredge.
