West End School
MONTHLY MEETING- OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of West End school Committee was held last night, Air, G. Tremaine presiding. Also present were: Messrs. A. W. Just, W. Schwabe, W. Collins, J. Dalziel, A. Penketh, A. E. Penfold, A. C. McLean and L. iSimmonds (secretary). The matter of purchasing a radio set for the school was held over pending inquiries as to cost. The view was expressed by the chairman that, if the Education Department desired sets iu the schools, it should provide them, as anything pertaining to the education ol the child was not a function of school committees. The capitation grants were so small that committees could hardly be expected to provide radio sets.
A letter was received from the Caretakers’ and Cleaners’ Union (Palmerston North branch) seeking favourable consideration for a request for increases in the wages paid to school caretakers. While the committee expressed sympathy with the desires of tfie writers, it was felt that, until such time as the capitation grants were increased, nothing could be done. Friday, November 6, was granted as a half-holiday for the Spring Show. The headmaster (Mr. H. W. Jackson) reported that the roll nurnbei stood at 407, with an average attendance for the past four weeks of 372. Ninety-five per cent, of tho average roll for the first four weeks of the present term and upon which the grading of .the school for 1937 would be decided
was 386. This would place the school in grado 0 next year. The usual eggcollection on behalf of Willard Home had been made last mouth, when 19 dozen eggs had been donated by the children. He had gratefully to acknowledge the following gifts to the school: A framed picture from Miss Outram, sample books of wallpaper from Alex Clark's, and a photograph of,the team which had won the seven-aside Rugby tournament, from Mr. Iv. Dawkins. .Lu the basketball tournament just concluded, the girls from West End had been successful in winning the Herbert Smith Cup.
