Extra Teacher Warranted at Terrace End

ATTENDANCES EXTREMELY SATISFACTORY. Present at a meeting of the Terraco End School Committee last evening were: Alessrs. W. B. Tennent (chairman), H. C. Blackwood , (secretary), R. C. Donald, C. R. Luke, E. G. Bennett, J. K. Patou, H. L. Cunninghame, J. Davidson, 11. D. Aiilne. The headmaster (Air. A. W. Thompson) reported as follows: Tho roll numbers 641, and daily attendances are very satisfactory', the highest in the past month being 625. Tho hospital class numbers 14. Under the new grading, this school will be entitled to an extra permanent teacher. For tho fifth successive time, the midget Rugby team was successful. ' The junior team tied with Central. Tho annual appeal for eggs for Home met a generous response. I wish to thank Alessrs. A. Clark, Ltd., for several pattern books, which are valuable to the lower classes.

The report was adopted with congratulations to the winning teams. A report was submitted by the visiting committee, Alessrs. Tennent and Davidson.

Authority was given for immediate repairs to tho baths where required. It was agreed to make the scllool available at Christmas for the purpose of a camp sponsored by the Red Cross Society for voluntary aid detachments. The Wanganui Education Board agreed to subsidise a lawnmowor purchase.

Following a circular letter from the Education Board, a sub-committee was appointed to investigate the cost and advisability of installing wireless in the school. The headmaster said wireless in schools was the coming thing, and the programmes available had recently improved considerably.

A circular letter was received from tho Caretakers’ and Cleaners’ Union (Palmerston North branch), asking the Echool committees in the city to increase the wages of caretakers if possible. Tho request was made in all good faith as it was felt that the salaries were low in comparison with those paid to other workers for this class of work.

Mr. Tenncnt said that the committee was in sympathy, but it was all a matter of ability to pay. He thought the Terrace End Committee was at present paying wages as high as those paid by any school in the city.

It was decided to adviso the union secretary that consideration of the recuest must be deferred pending advice from the Education Board as to revised capitation. When tho baths open, ordinary weekday hours will be observed on Wednesdays, and on Saturdays they will be open until 7 p.m. It was agreed to hold a gala on November 28.

Although particulars were submitted for a scheme for milk distribution now in operation at College street, it was considered no scheme would be satisfactory at Terrace End unless it served all tho children.
