MEETING OF CRICKET COMMITTEE.

The committeo of tho Southern Hawke’s Bay Cricket Association met on Monday' night, Air E. N. Hogben presiding over Alcssrs 11. C. Bailey, L. F. Allen, P. Brandon, IL G. Stewart, R. L. Grant and 11. Glass. Air L. G. Schmidt was absent on apology. The New Zealand Cricket Council advised that the Alanawatu Association had raised the proposal of forming a fifth major cricket association.—it was resolved, on tho chairman’s motion, to instruct the association’s delegate (Air F. Woods) to support any movement having for its effect the providing of opportunities for players outside the four centres to take part in first-class cricket.

Tho Woodville Cricket Club objected to the action of the annual meeting of the association in extending tho hours of play in the local competitions outside of 4§ hours. The chairman ruled that the decision arrived at. was null and void, being contrary to the rules. Notice of motion was tabled by the chairman to amend Rule 44 to allow of the management committee being empowered to fix the hours of play. A meeting will bo held in the Farmers' Union room on Alonday, October 19, at 7.30 p.m. It was decided that the hours of play on tho opening day (October 17) be 1.30 to 6 p.m. With regard to the forming of an Umpires’ Association, it was resolved that Alessrs 11. C. Bailey and G. Al. Piper be asked to organise and convene a meeting and then report to the special meeting on October 19.

ANNUAL SALE OF PEDIGREE JERSEY BULLS. The fourteenth annual sale of pedigree Jersey bulls, under the auspices of tho Dannevirke District Jersey Cattle Club, which was held on the showgrounds yesterday morning, attracted a fairly large gathering of prospective buyers. Forty-three w-ell-bred bulls came forward in excellent condition for the judging, which attracted a great deal of interest. The judging was carried out by Air F. V. Bryant, Alangatainoka, who commented very favourably upon the high-class quality of the animals.

Tho judge’s awards were as follow: — Bull, two years and over: A. G. Somervell's (Otawhao, Takapau) “Silodale Dick,” calved August 15, 1934, 1; tho same vendor’s “Silodale Don,” calved September 30, 1934, 2; W. 11. Smith’s (Tataramoa), ‘’Frankleigh Laddie,” calved November 24, 1934, 3. Y'earling bull: W. 11. Alonteith’s (Timber Bay), “Kowliai Bank Bobs,” 55235, 1; W. Chisnall’s (Piri Piri), “Awapiri Tom,” 85195, calved July 23, 1935, 2; T. E. Johnstone’s (Raumati), “Glen Rata Cure,” SB2OS, Mjve.fi August 20, 1935, 3.

The judge, 1 commenting on the prizewinning animals, said the first prize yearling bull was an exceptionally wellgrown beast, and was well brought out.

Previous to the commencement of the sale, the classification committee inspected the bulls, and it was a credit to the vendors that out of the total brought, forward only three lost their places in the catalogue. The auctioneer announced that it was very gratifying to note that there was a general improvement in the bulls as compared with last year, and said improved quality had been a pleasing feature at other sales in the North Island this season. There was at present a considerable shortage in good bulls, and he contended that buyers at the present time would be able to buy cheaper at the sales than privately. He predicted that by using tho very best type of bulls there was an excellent prospect for dairy-farmers in the coming seasons.
