Control of Cricket in Manawatu

OPENING DAT ALTERED TO SATURDAY WEEK.

SELECTORS APPOINTED,

Mr. A, M, Ongley (president) presided at the meeting of the management committee of the Manawatu Cricket Association last evening. Others present were: Messrs. K. OlJiver, J, It. Jiardie, J. Callichan, I'. Hubbard, E. 1). Weir, E. J. Werry, C. Griggs and K. A. Brace (secretary). An apology was received from Mr. \V. H. Wilson.

In view of a special effort by them on Saturday, the secretary of the Prosperity Queen Carnival committee made tho request that the Cricket Association's opening day be postponed for one week. Tho chairman stated the rain that day would mean tliat play on Saturday next would injure the wickets. It was agreed, on the motion of Messrs. Hardio and Griggs, that ,the opening be postponed till October 17, as requested by the Queen Carnival ■ committee.

Horowhenua made application for a match against Manawatu B at Palmerston North on Labour Bay. Horowhenua also entered a challenge for the Goldiinch and Cousins Cup. Before tho request was dealt with the meeting discussed tho question of what was to happen with the rest of the cricketers on Labour Bay. Finally it was decided to leave the matter of arranging for representative matches on Labour Bay to the secretary and Mr. Weir, who will roport to the next meeting.

Old Boys forwarded a requ'est that the committee reconsider tho decision that the team nominated' by them for junior A should bo relegated to junior B. Tho club advised that tho team was a stronger ono than the committee realised.

The secretary reported that a late entry for the junior A competition had como in from Massey College. Tho chairman suggested the wishes of both clubs could bo met and it was resolved that the teams bo accepted for junior A. Advico was received from tho City Council that tho rent of grounds or cost of preparing wickets required would be £125 plus 10 per cent, of the gross gates. It was resolved to write the council asking that if it is subsequently found possible to avoid paying overtime for groundsmen preparing wickets on .Saturday mornings that the charge to the Cricket Association be reconsidered. Mr. Norman Hassell forwarded suggestions for keeping fuller records. It was agreed the suggestions were good and Air. Galiichan intimated he would be prepared to accept appointment as ono of tho statisticians. Air. Galiichan, however, thought it would bo easier to work from tho book, instead of from cards, as suggested byMr. Hassell.

Air. Weir wondered if Mr. Hassell would look after the senior B competition. it was resolved that Air. Galiichan (senior A), Mr. Hassell (senior B), Air. Weir (junior A), Air. N. Moulton (junior B), be appointed statisticians. it was also decided to thank Mr. Hassell for His letter and suggestions. The chairman remarked mat clubs wishing to regrade players should make application in writing before next Tuesday. Xlio recommendations from the annual meeting concerning the points to bo asvarded in ciiampiouskip matches were considered by tho meeting and it was eveuLually decided that tne existing system be used during tho coming season. in answer to Mr. Werry, the chairman remarked that it was held that the old system of allocating points did not offer enough encouragement to teams to play for the outrignt win. The secretary argued that at present tho leading team might play safe, but that it was “neck or nothing” with the losing team. Air. Hardie asked if thero was anything wrong with the present system, but tho chairman said he did not think so, that the system had been adopted niter due consideration. Air. Werry and Mr. Hardie moved that no change be made, but Mr. Ollfver moved as an amendment that the (Sydney system be adopted. Mr. Galiichan seconded the amendment which provided for 10 points for the outright win; seven points for a win on ike first innings; ono point lor a ioss ou tho first innings; live points for a tie; four points for a tie on the first inrffngs and three points cucli for a draw.

Tho amendment was lost and the motion carried. In regard to the junior B competition it was resolved that the matches should be decided on one day. It was resolved that the association appoint a sole selector for the senior teams and Mr. (Jngiey was elected to the position. Mr. N. Hassell ryas appointed for the senior B grade, M.r. Werry for junior A, and Mr. It. S. itedward for junior B. The discussion regarding coaching was deferred till next meeting and Mr. Wheatley is to be asked to attend and give his views. Ground fees for this season were fixed at one shilling for senior A and B, ninepence for junior A and sixpence for junior B. The arrangements with High School and Technical will be the same as for last season. Palmerston seniors to practice at the Sportsground to-night, and Thursday night:— W. Morris, I). Moloney, A. M.
