SYDNEY, Oct. 5,
Tho weather is fine for the Randwick meeting. The Eight-Hour Day public holiday also coincides. Gold Hod jarred a front joint during the running of the Derby, and is not likely to start in the Melbourne Cup. Silver Jubilee broke down badly m the Epsom Handicap. There is a doubt whether he will race again. The Sydney Morning Herald, commenting on the principal races on Saturday, says the Epsom was one of the most eventful in the long history ot this important mile race. Gay Lovot did not keep a straight course in the straight, veering out apparently under pressure. Gay Lover and Capna provided a great duel, which ended so unsatisfactorily. Capris is the first mare to win the Epsom for thirty years. The Derby was marred by Shakespeare's fall and bv the change in tactics in the riding of Mala, which left the impression that the colt’s prosoects had been prejudiced. Mala was not ridden with'judgment, and the race was made for Talking. Mala had Gold Rod beaten 1-i furlongs from the finish, but the effort took toll of,his reserves and he; fell an easy prey to Talking’s challenge. The Spring Stakes served to emphasise the superiority of tho New :Zealander, Silver Ring, ■ arid the prospects of Sydney horses winning any weight-for-age races at this meeting are no. bright.
