Marriage Dowries Not Wanted

: The-maidens-and-men of Ceylon are very disturbed. One of the oldest societies on the island—the Kalutara Maha Jana Sabha—which boasts a membership of thousands, embracing all classes of the people, have passed a motion urging the Government to provide facilities for young people to enter matrimony on the ground that a large number of girls, eager and fit for marwere condemned to remain spinsters for want of a dowry. The society is now receiving protests from hundreds of enraged young people. They point out that the time has possed when a girl is chosen for marriage by the value of her dowry; stress that dowry hunters are not extinct, and say they are determined to have them “exterminated.” 1
