LONDON, October 2,

Tho Australian Associated Press representative att Geneva says that at the inaugural meeting of the League Council in tho magnificent new chamber, Mr W. J. Jordan (New Zealand) declared that he was very happy that New Zealand’s accession to the Council coincided with such an important occasion. He was conscious of his great responsibility. It would be especially hard to follow iu the footsteps of Australia. The Fifth Committee began the study of child welfare, and listened with close attention to Mr Jordan’s account of New Zealand’s extensive work in that field. Whilo commending services for improving the lot of children who como beforo the courts and other public authorities, Mr Jordan made a strong plea for attention to the requirements of tho normal child, especially in rural districts. Tho Borough Council at Ramsgate, Mr Jordan’s birthplace, has conferred on him tho freedom of the city.

Disarmament Committee

RUGBY, October 2,

A Geneva message states that the Disarmament Committee of the League Assembly met this afternoon and elected Dr. Lange (Norway) as president and M. Sadak (Turkey) as vice-presi-dent. The delegates stood for a moment’s silence in memory of the lato Mr Arthur Henderson, president of the Disarmament Conference. Mr Eden leaves Geneva tonight for a few days’ holiday at Monte Carlo.

M. Blum,in Geneva

RUGBY, October 2.

M. Blum, tho French Premier, arrived at Geneva by train this morning. He began a series of private talks at a luncheon which he gavo to-day in honour of tho British Foreign Minister, Mr Anthony Eden. Paris Press reports anticipate that as a result of tho visit French initiative in favour of setting up a European economic and financial committee along tho lines suggested by tho Into M. Briand will take active form.
