WANGANUI AND DISTRICT
LIMIT OF 100 ENTRIES
Although, last year the Returned Soldiers' tournament was played during September, on account of the Seafiold, Wanganui ladies and Wanganui championship tournaments, it has become necessary to put it forward to October this year, and will now be played on Thursday, October 15, commencing at 1 p.m. ts The tournament is open to any returned soldier who left New Zealand, and also to members of any force outside New Zealand who served in the war.
Owing to the large number of entries received last year a limit of 100 entries has been decided upon. Entries will bo received in the following order of preference: — (.1) Those who played in last year’s tournament.
(2) Players of G handicap and under who wish to compete in the Eeturned Soldiers’ Championship. (3) To thoso players from Wanganui and district who have not played in previous tournaments. The district will extend to the north as far as Hawora, Eactihi and Taihapo, and in the south as far as Marton and Bulls. It is understood that this year a similar tournament is to be organised at New Plymouth. Tho fact that entries for tho Wanganui tournament have to be limited, should indicate that there is amplo room for organising a tournament both in New Plymouth and Palmerston North.
Ono round will bo played, but both stroko and bogey score will be kept. Tho . following aro matches to be played:— Returned Soldiers’ Championship (holder, J. Goss).—Best gross score. Stroko play. Anzac Stroko Match.—Best net score on handicap. Teams’ Stroko Match.—Teams of four; aggregate net score. Teams to be nominated with entry. Each team to consist of players of the same unit. Any players who cannot arrango a team will be drawn by the committee. First Wellington Battalion Championship. —Best net score on handicap. Second Wellington Battalion Championship.—Best net score on handicap. N.Z. Rifle Brigade Championship. — Best net score on handicap.
"Footsloggers’” Championship (excluding Wellington and Eifle Brigade Battalion).—-Best net score on handicap. Artillery, Mounted Eifles, and Machine-Gunners’ Championship.—Best net score on handicap. Other Units (Air Force, E.A.M.C., Engineers, Navy, A.1.F., Imperial Forces, etc.).—Best net score on handicap. ~ Entries close with Mr E. D. Smart, care Box 105, Wanganui, on Monday, October 12, 1936. Unit and rank are to bo given with entry, also club handicap. Entrance fee for all events, including green fees, will boss. Trophies will bo awarded to winners and runners-up.
In order to give tho afternoon a "digger” aspect players aro asked to wear their company badges, battalion patches, military tunic or hat, or any other war souvenir that they may have in their possession. The presentation of prizes, etc., will be held at tho Belmont "Estaminet” at the conclusion of tho day’s "fighting.”
