Japanese Blockade Feared CHINESE FORCE OF 70,000 United Press Association—toy Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. SHANGHAI, Oct. 2. The fears of war between China and Japan are intensified. The Nanking Government has reported that it is mobilising a force of over 70,000 soldiers to guard the Nanking-Hangkow-Shanghai rail system. Japanese marines have virtually occupied Hongkcw. Tho British uavai authorities are preparing to evacuate British women and children from the Yangtze ports in the event of emergency.
The possibility of a Japanese blockade of the Yangtze ports is feared. The serious impasse in the negotiations between China and Japan and trie firmness of China towards the Japan ese demands have thrown Japanese diplomatic quarters into consternation, and they are now pessimistic of success in tho negotiations. The exodus of Chinese from Hongkew and Chapei -has been renewed. The passing of the death sentence on two Chinese on a charge of shooting a Japanese marine at Hongkcw_in November, 1935, has caused satisfaction in Japanese circles, but has not lessened the tension. The Japanese Consul at Changsha, alleging that the Chinese police are hushing up an alleged attempt to blow up his residence, is protesting to the liunan Government.
