A.J.C Derby Won by Talking

Woodville Colt, Mala, in Second Place % GAY LOVER BEATS CAPRIS IN EPSOM, BUT PLACINGS REVERSED United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Sunday, 7 p.m. SYDNEY, Oct. 4. The Australian Jockey Club ’3 spring meeting opened at Randwick on Saturday in warm weather. Thero was an attendance of 70,000 and the track was in excellent condition. Gold Bod, which was considered to hold a mortgage on the Derby, failed to stay the distance and he was beaten into third place. The race commenced sensationally for several horses collided at barrier rise and momentarily a grave smash appeared imminent when Shakespeare fell, but the rest of the field raced away unharmed. Talking was the early pacemaker from Gold Rod and the Woodvilletrained colt, Mala. Passing the mile Gold Rod ran to the front with Mala in close attendance and they continued running in that order until the home turn where Mala supplanted Gold Bod and appeared likely to go on to victory, but Talking, finishing with rare determination, worried the New Zealand colt out of the prize.

Tho Epsom Handicap was marred by an unsatisfactory start and later inter ference in tho straight cost the winner Gay Lover, the race. Spearmeta raced away to the lead at barrier rise from Black Laughter, Gay Lover and Capris. Turning for home Gay Lover, Black Laughter and Capris were prominent. The last-named took charge at the distance but was immediately challenged by Gay Lover and in a desperato finish Gay Lover passed the post with a head advantago but lost the race cue to interference in the straight. Silver Bing gave a spiondid exhibition of his galloping ability In the Spring Stakes, Running in third position throughout ho took charge a furlong from home and passed the judge with a length advantage, which performance greatly pleased his Metropolitan admirers.
