From Our Own Correspondent Tennis Club. The opening of the Foxton Tennis Chib's 1936—37 season took place on Saturday afternoon when despite the windy weather which prevailed, there was a good attendance of members. The president (Mr. it. Head) performed the opening ceremony in the absence of the patron (Mr. ,M. E. Perreau). Mr. Head extended a welcome to those present. He was pleased to say that a large number of new members had been admitted to the club already this season, and it was to be hoped that members would endeavour to attain a high standard of play which would enable them to compete successfully with other clubs during the season. Everything augured well for a. most successful season. After wishing the club every success he called upon Miss L. Thompson to serve the lirst ball, and the courts were then declared officially opened for play. A combined doubles elimination content was indulged in during the afternoon and was greatly enjoyed, the detailed results being as lollow: First round: Mr. A. Martin and Mrs. V. Husband defeated Mr. A. Anderson and Miss J. Francis, Mr. R. Read and Miss JJ. Pillar defeated Mr. D. Speirs and .Miss M. Thynne, Mr. Campbell (Shannon) and Miss E. Francis defeated Mr. Robinson (Shannon) and Miss J. Barron, Mr. X. Reader and Miss N. Woods defeated Misses S. Barron and A. Fraser. Second round: Mr. U. Read and Miss D. Pillar defeated Mr. A. Martin and Mrs. V. Husband. Mr. Campbell and Miss E. Francis defeated Mr. N. Reader and Miss X 7. Woods. Final: Mr. R. Read and Miss D. Pillar defeated Mr. Campbell and Miss E. Francis. A pleasing interlude of the afternoon's programme occurred at the conclusion of ai ternoor. tea, when Mr. ft. Read, on behalf of club members, conveyed appreciation of services rendered over a number of years by the retiring secretary. Miss h. , Thompson and called upon her to accept a clock as a token of esteem and appreciation from her fellow members. Miss Thompson briefly returned thanks for the gift, saying that she felt greatly honoured. Gas Works’ Fate. According to a resolution passed by the Fox ton Borough Council in Julv last, unless the local consumers givo the council a guarantee of a 23 per cent, increase in revenue by Wednesday, September 39, tho works are to be closed down on March 31 oi next year. Y\ ednesday, therefore, is the last day on which consumers of gas will have an opportunity of having any say in the fate of tho Foxton gas works, and as the council has not as vet received any guarantee, it ia an almost foregone conclusion that the works will be closed on the date mentioned. Golf. ■ The first round of tho Herrington (men s) golf championship was played on tho local links over the week-end, the results being as follow: B. C. Bryant defeated J. D. Purcell, E. Petersen defeated T. Crotty, K. Robinson defeated E. Shorn, .f. H. Purcell, a bye.
Successful itnop Day. The committee members of the Foxton School Parents’ Association conducted a •successful shop day on Friday. The effort veas made to raise funds for the radio fund, and brisk business was transacted in the sale of eggs of which over 1500 were collected in an egg drive which wa3 held at tlie school. The winners of the various competitions were as follow: Dinner, Mrs. E. Dix; silk stockings (donated by C. M. Ross Co.), Mrs. T. Chaffey; box of chocolates (donated bv Mr. T. Chaffey), .lack Haines; towels (donated by Mr. L. Fletcher), Air. E. Morgan, Druids Meet, A.D. Bro. Thomson presided over the usual meeting of the United Ancient Order of Druids, when D.P. Bro. McKnight was present on an official visit. An invitation was received from the JLevin Lodge to attend a meeting of the Royal Arch Chapter to he held on October 14. It was decided to commence practising lor the ritual competition to be held m November to defend the shield which was won last November. A.D. Bister E. iiteombo will be In charge of the chosen team and will act as coach and M.C. Concert, A large audience attended a' concert arranged by the Ford Entertainers, of ialmerston North, in aid of the funds of tlie Leach Improvement Society. The concert took place in the Town Hall an? the sum of £l4 which was raised bv tho eifort is to be ear-marked for the beach water supply fund. All the items were wed received and at the conclusion of the programme the Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perloau) thanked the visitors for their assistance and expressed the society's gratification at the takings. The visitors were subsequently entertained to supper bv a ladies committee. Persona!. The friends of Airs. E. Ebbett, of Johnston street will regret to learn that she is an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital. Miss G. Coley has returned to Foxton •lfter spending an enjoyable holiday in Wellington. Mr. C. T Aliiler. of Pahlatua, has acquired the property of Air. V. J. AlcDowell in Avenue road. Mr. Miller intends going m for poultry farming.
