Bicycle Thief and Gaol Escapee

ONE MONTH FOR HALF-CASTE CHINAMAN The half-caste Chinaman, Wm. Joseph Gee alias Bain, aged 32 years, a baker and cook by occupation, who escaped from the Palmerston North lock-up recently and was re-arrested at Petone, appeared before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court yesterday. He admitted the offence as well as rho theft of two bicycles, one owned by S. W. Oliver and the other by Edward Brown. DetectiveSergeant liickerdike stated that Gee was being held by the police for the theft of the first bicycle when he escaped and tho second machine was in his possession when re-arrested. Accused had a long list of previous convictions and was at present awaiting sentence on four charges of theft. Mr J, L. Stout, S.M., imposed a sentence of one month’s gaol on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent. His Worship observed that it looked as if accused wouldn’t get out in a hurry and that there was every possibility of the Supreme Court declaring him an habitual criminal.
