< Rifle Club. Pohangina Valley Defence Rifle Club held the first meeting of the 1336-37 season on the Kaumai range on Saturday when a trophy presented by the patroness. Miss Akers, Was competed for over ranges of 300 and 500 yards. The new handicapping rules were introduced for the first time, handicaps being made for each range with a limit of 33 at 300 and 600 yards and 34 at 600 yards. The competition, which was held under very cold and squally conditions, was won by Rfn. A. Balmer .with a score of 68. Details are as follows: A, Balmor 1, 34, 1, 33, 68: JSpelman 2, 32, 2, 31, 67; I. Neill 1, 32, 1, 32, 66; M. Fitzherbert 1, 32, 1, 32, 66; 17. Fitzherbert 2, 26, -2. 31. 61; D. Spelman 1. 31, 1, 33, 63; J Brooking 2, 29, 1, 33, 66; D. Balmer 1, 29, 0, 32, 62; C. Brooking 6, 20. 5, 20, 'sl. Farmers’ Union. A meeting of the Pohangina Valley branch of the Farmers’ Union was held at Kaumai on. Saturday evening. Mr. J. D. Balmer presiding over a good attendance. The provincial secretary wrote inviting members to. meet the new Dominion president at a special meeting on August 11. The New Zealand Grassland Association extended an invitation to members to attend the annual conference to be held in Palmerston North from August IS to 21. I t was resolved to support a remit from the Opiki branch, reading as follows; “That the attention of the .Minister of Agriculture bo drawn, to the injustice done to farmers by reason of the inadequate payments made as compensation for condemned animals, and to point out the actual payments received as compared with the payment provided for in the .Stock Act.” It was slated that as low as 30s was being received for a highgrade cow. Remits to be moved at the liert executive meeting are as follows: "That all farmers, when securing help from their neighbours, should be compelled to ha\<3 an accident insurance policy to cover the same.” The meeting decided to advise the executive that an endeavour should be made to enlighten farmers as to the seriousness of neglecting to take this precaution.” (2) “That it be a recommendation to the Dominion executive that steps ho taken to establish a benefit fund for members of the union, to be maintained by a levy ,on all members.” It was decided to advise that the branch favoured holding the matter in abeyance until the provisions of the National Health Insurance Scheme become known. Mr. Balmer tabled a letter from the Cooperative Fisheries Ltd., in further support of a remit proposed by the' branch. It. was resolved to forward the letter to be considered with the remit. Mr. Balmer gav6 a brief outline of the canvass made by the organiser. Mr. Niederer, which had given excellent results. Mr. J. T. Moar, the district’s representative on the directorate of the Cheltenham Dairy Co., addressed the meeting, giving a review .of the past year’s operations and the probable effect of the new legislation. ;Speaking on. the subject of election of directors, Mr. Moar stressed the importance of every farmer recording his vote. Too often a large number of votes were unrecorded and if the farmers of the district wished to retain a representative on the' directorate, it was more than probable that every vote would be needed.
