Nautical Prints the Vogue

Many of the women privileged to join the great ship Queen Mary for her maiden voyage wore materials specially designed for the occasion. But fashions do not long remain exclusive, and very probably humbler trippers boarding the Thames pleasure steamers this summer will also be wearing focks covered, for example, with the words “Queen Mary” closely written to form an all-over pattern. Tho usual choice of floral prints and those patterned in spots, checks and stripes, is being widely extended. A close view of beach rompers or a cruising frock discloses that it is covered with postage stamps, or Chinese junks, cherubs, Russian dancers, Pekingese dogs, clock faces or islands. . Tho same idea is being applied with more restraint to house furnishings. Cottons, chintzes and linens are patterned in stars, anchors, horses and musical instruments. Oiled silk, which is most popular for kitchen and bathroom curtains, may be printed or even hand-painted with dsh and seagulls, or kettles and spoons, according to ' the room. And even the conservative Englishman follows the vogue with scarf and tie patterned, appropriately or not, with foxes’ heads and riding whips.
