Shops and Soldiers’ Club Gutted
v ' DISASTROUS TIRE AT GORE Per Press Association. GORE, June 1. A two storeyed building containing cho Star Stores Grocery, W. Christie’s .cycle shop, Mrs. M- Isabeth’s mantle 'shop, on the ground floor,, and the rooms of the Gore Soldiers’ Club on. the second floor, was gutted by fire. The first outbreak, the cause of which is unknown, occurred at about 10 o’clock last night when Mrs. Isabeth’s shop was gutted, the rest of the building being saved, due to the eflicient work of tko fire brigade. The second outbreak, the cause also being unknown, occurred at 2 a.m. to-day, an l had a strong hold by the time the brigade arrived. It completely wrecked 1 building which was erected in 1906. The building was owned by the Gore Proprietary Coy and was insured with th« Queensland Co. for £2500.. The contents in each shop were insured, ( • istie’s with the Yorkshire for £475, the others not being ascertainable. The Soldiers’ Club contents were insured in the New Zealand Co. for £650. Th- loss is a severe one to the Club as many are irreplaceable records, war relics, historic photographs, etc., which were completely destroyed as well as threo billiard tables and upwards of 100 cues and the Club library. The Club steward and secretary of the Gore R.S.A., Mr. G. Gerken, also suffered a severe loss of private stock, tobacco, etc.
Blaze at Convent BRIGADE’S GOOD WORK Per Press Association. DARGiviLLE, Last Night. The fire brigade received a call at 7,15 this morning to a fire at St. Joseph’s Convent, Mangawhare. A full muster of the brigade responded promptly. The fire started in a washhouse and spread along the covered way into the back portions of the convent building. A bathroom and pantry were damaged outside the walls of the main'building and the washhouse was a total loss. Fortunately thero was an absence of wind, otherwise the task of the brigade would have been much more difficult. Two leads were taken from tlie main road, a distanco of 400 yards, and another lead from Logan street, using the high-pressure pump on tho engine. A good pressure was immediately available and the flames were quickly under control. The building and its contents are covered by insurance but the amounts are not available at present. The live Sisters and five boarders living on the premises were at early Mass. The building was officially opened by tho late Bishop Lenihan in December, 1907.
