Stonn Strikes Te Aroha
EXTENSIVE DAMAGE RESULTS. Per Press Association. TE AROHA, Mar. 27. Yesterday’s north easterly storm, accompanied by heavy rain, struck Te Aroha with cyclonic force. Scores ot chimneys were blown down and massive trees uprooted, while many buildings in all parts of the town were unroofed and considerably damaged. The District High School, the Catholic School, two Railway Department Ileuses, the railway goods shed, the Bonnie Glen and Railway boarding houses, and the dairy factory suffered considerably. Several residences were partly demolished and numerous sheds and garages blown down. At Waihou, Mr A. Moore’s shed was unroofed and several - pigs and two cows were electrocuted. The storm was the worst on record. Damage at Thames WATERFRONT AREAS FLOODED. THAMES, Mar. 27. Heavy seas at high tide last night between 10 o’clock and midnight pounded the Thames Coast road, causing considerable damage and flooding the waterfront areas. The worst portion of the damage is between Tararu and Thornton's Bay, a distance of six miles, where the road in places w r as undermined and partly washed away. Almost the whole stretch was strewn with large boulders and driftwood, the sand in places being over a foot deep. The road in parts is only negotiable for one way trafiie. The telegraph line along the foreshore is down owing to several poles having snapped. Properties fronting the various bays were damaged and fences and gates were torn away. Between Waiomio and Tapu, further up the Firth of Thames, some ten chains of a stone remaining wall was demolished. It is estimated tlfe cost of replacing it will be £SOO. After thieves had recently cut open number tho total personnel of .the Army and Navy by two to one,
