Slightly Weaker Tone

Closing Wanganui Wool

Sale

NO SLACKENING OF DEMAND

Per Press Association. WANGANUI, Last Night.

Despite a slightly weaker tone in tho market, it was evident at tho opening of tho Wanganui wool sale tonight that there had been no slackening of the demand. The catalogue comprised 24,000 bales of heavy-condi-tioned crossbreds, a fair proportion of the late-shorn wool being affected by seed.

Reports from the brokers operating first on the catalogue showed that the downward toudeney of coarser wools reflected at- Auckland was in evidence here to the same extent. Lambs’wool declined, but the full effect of the decline as registered at Auckland was not felt here, because at tho last Wanganui sale the prices offered for this class of wool had not reached their peak. In a market which showed a generally easier tendency, good-class hogget wool held its ground and was Arm to one-halfpenny dearer compared with last Wanganui sale. Pieces, bellies, and locks were easier by one-half-penny. Best crutchings participated in the recent advance for this class of offering, but seedy and inferior grades were not in demand.

“This brings to a close a season which, broadly speaking, must bo regarded as a satisfactory one,” stated a broker. "Six months ago it was estimated that the carry-over wool in the Dominion was in tho vicinity of 165,000 bales, a quantity regarded by some people as likely to have a de pressing effect on values throughout tho season. During recent weeks it became evident that the carry-over was neai'er 200,000 bales, but the large, offerings at every centre fortunately failed to shake the market to any appreciable extent, and the sound statistical position to-day makes it reasonable for growers to look forward to next season with quiet confidence.” The sale is still in progress. Brokers’ Reports FARMERS’ CO-OP. DISTRIBUTING CO. (Special to “Times.”) WANGANUI, Last Night. The New Zealand Farmers’ Co-op. Distributing Co., Ltd., report as follows: We submitted a catalogue of 3300 bales, of which 90 per cent, was sold under the hammer'. Competition was keen for all wools showing style and quality, but medium to coarse topmaking wools were from par to id lower than at previous sales, pine ciossbred, on the other hand, was dearer by -Id and in some cases Id per lb. Lambs’ wool and Southdown were lower, as in recent sales in other centres. On looking back over the season, the market has been remarkably steady, and in view of the large amount of wool sold, it would appear that the demand has overtaken tho supply-. In addition to this season’s clip, a large quantity of carried-over wool has been sold, and for the first time since 1929, the brokers’ stores arc nearly empty. This augurs well for next season, and growers are to be congratulated on having met the market and so brought about a healthier condition. Next season’s clip will coine on to the market without being affected by large stocks of old wool, and this should be to the benefit of the growers.
