Death Follows Accident to Settler

WELL-KNOWN PIONEER PASSES Fatal results have unfortunately attended the accident which happened to Mr. Wm. David Buick, of Tiakitahuna, on Wednesday, deceased passing away in the Palmerston North Hospital yesterday morning. Quite a gloom passed over the whole district when it became known that Mr. Buick had died under such tragic circumstances. On Wednesday he was helping his brother-in-law, Mr. K. bed don, to fall a tree by the homestead and in pulling on a wire in the hopes of guiding the tree in its fall, deceased was unable to move quickly enough to avoid being struck by the branch of an adjacent tree which was snapped off, striking him a blow on the side oi the head and inflicting injuries from which he did not regain consciousness. “Bill," as he was familiarly known to all, was born at Belmont, Lower liutt, just a few months off 7U years ago. lie had resided at Tiakitahuna for 57 years, having arrived there with his parents at the age of Id years, lie belonged to a pioneering family and in addition to a number of brothers and sisters who arc left to mourn his death, is his mother who, in her i)3rd year, is left bereaved of her first born. The late Mr. Buick was one of the first members of the Manawatu A. and P. Association and the Manawatu Racing Club. He was a keen sportsman and loved a good horse. As one of the foundation members of the Manawatu Hunt Club he followed the hounds until quite recent years. Ho was also a member of the Oroua Lodge of Druids for closo on 40 years. Although line tributes could be paid to him in the field of sport as well as in other spheres of life, possibly one of the greatest tributes could be paid in the great example which he has left as a sufferer. In recent years the deceased gentleman underwent several operations and was , almost continually in pain. To the . casual observer this would not be ap- - parent but those who knew him intimately knew what he had to bear and , do not cease to marvel at how little he ( complained of his lot. .
