As the result of investigations by tho Minister of Mines (Hon. P. C. Webb), coal companies in the North Island which had been using machines for the extraction of pillar coal have agreed to eliminate the use of the machines for that class of mining, and forty more miners have been employed. This announcement was made by Mr Webb in an interview' at Christchurch yesterday.
Injury to an eye may result in the partial loss of sight to W. F. Smith; a well-known swimmer and the former captain of the Auckland water polo team. While playing in an inter-house water .polo match at the Auckland Tepid Baths on Thursday he was accidentally struck by an opposing player of the Philomel team, a finger inflicting a cut in the eye. He received medical attention. A later examination reveals that a piece of tissue has been removed from the eve-ball.
