Manawatu Women's Club

MOST SUCCESSFUL CARD AFTERNOON

The Manawatu Women’s Club hold its annual card afternoon to provide a hamper for the mental hospital at Messrs Collinson and Cunninghame’s yesterday. It was gratifying to see so many members present and the funds will benefit considerably by the effort. Bridge and 500 were enjoyed during the afternoon, tho winners being Mrs F. J. Parkes (bridge), Mrs E. Bary (500), and Mrs E. Harris (lucky spot). The prizes were presented by Mrs Mansford, who expressed her appreciation of tho fact that so many members had attended, thus contributing towards a pleasant afternoon as well as a most successful one.

Entertainment for the non-card players was provided by tho plny-readiug circle, and a competition for the lucky number was won by Mrs W. B. Cameron.

Under the capable direction of Miss Marjorie Cranston, rehearsed readings of two plays, providing striking contrast in conception, were presented. The first play, "They Went f orth” (Rubenstein), was written round the period of 1832, when Russia seized Jewish children and forced them into the army, and tho efforts of the Jewish Rabbi to rescue the children and smuggle them out of the coun-.ry. lhe cast was as follows: —Reb Joseph Rubenstein, Mrs I. Bagnall; Beile, his wife, Miss Cranston; Annetta, Mrs Henderson; Leon, Mrs Pryor; Sarah, Mrs Fuller; Russian officer, Mrs Ballinger; stage directions, Mrs Pryor. The second offering was a play by Arthur Pinero, "Playgoers,” an up-to-date comedy. The story centres round a young wife and her endeavours to keep her maid-servants. She suggests that they all be sent to the theatre, and the "play expresses their reactions to tho suggestion. Following were the characters and readers:—Mistress, Mrs Ballinger; Master, Mrs Henderson; Parlourmaid, Mrs Pryor; Housemaid, Mrs Cameron; Kitchenmaid, Mrs Donald; Useful Maid, Miss Cranston; Cook, Mrs Fuller; stage directions, Miss Cranston. A dainty afternon tea provided 3 pleasing interlude. Vases of asters in tonings of mauve and pink were effectively arranged on gay little cloths. The various prizes had been kindiv donated by Mcsdames A. E. Mansford, A. E. Hansel, L. H. Collinson and D C. Pryor.
