Forty-four Men Arrested
SENSATION ON ‘AUCKLAND WATERFRONT
Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night. A sensation was caused on the waterfront this morning when a party of detectives suddenly appeared in two motor-cars which drew up ueur the entrance to tjueen’s Wharf. Alighting from cars the party moved swiftly on to a section of the wharf cunuectrng Queen's Wharf with tho central wharf and surrounded a crowd of 44 men who were later taken to the wharf policy station.
it is alleged that four gambling "schools" wero in progress when tho detectives arrived, one playing "twoup" and the others "crown and anchor." A number of dice were seized as well as "crown and anchor" boards. The coup was made so suddenly that none of the men involved wat aware that anything was amiss until tho eight detectives were upon them. They submitted to the questioning in good humour and exchanged badinage with the detectives and also the police sergeant and two constables who had arrived on the scene. It is alleged that one of the men acted as a "scout" for the others, his point of vantage being the top of aboiler. The men will later appear in the Police Court on summons. The raid is the biggest ever couneeted with alleged gambling on tho waterfront and was carried out following numerous complaints. The proceedings quickly attracted a large number of bystanders who wore interested spectators of the whole episode.
