Farewell Social Evening at Bunnythorpe
The largo gathering of friends of Mr. and' Mrs. Gordon Duthie assembled for the social ovenmg in their honour testified to the esteem in which.they are held. The evening took tho form of a dance interspersed with items w'hich were well received. Music for dancing was supplied by Messrs Powell, Hyde and Hooper. Items were rendered by Mrs. Cameron, Miss K. Coomber and Mr. Leu Woods, all having to respond to encores. Mr. Woods also led a community sing and amused tho audience with some of his amusing stories. After supper a presentation of a wallet was made to Mr. Duthie by Mr. J. Linklater. Before tho presentation Mr. McKenzie, Mr. E. Clcvely and Mr. 0. Jackson spoke briefly of Mr. Duthie’s work on behalf of the school committee, sports club, football and tennis clubs., Mr. Linklater apologised for the absence of Mr. Duthie, senr., who .was unable to be present owing to ill-health. It gavo him much pleasure, said Mr. Linklater, to be present to perform this little duty.' It was good to see one of the younger generation taking an active and working interest in the affairs of the community and there was not one worth while organisation that Mr. Duthie had not helped to the utmost of his ability. la his earlier days he had been active in every branch of .sport and since .then had rendered yeoman service in tho conduct of sport. As a member of the school committee he had worked hard and was one of'a committee of which the residents had every reason to bo proud. The record of service rendered by Mr. Duthie . for the district in general was. a shining, example to other members of his generation. In handing over , the gift Mr. Linklater extended the best wishes for future happiness from all • his Bunriythorpe friends. " - ; On rising to respond Mr. Duthie was accorded musical honours. On behalf of Mrs. Duthie and himself, he thanked everyone-for the gift and‘good wishes. His work had been a-pleasure,;he said/ and he had derived much happiness from it and he was sure the same applied to Mrs. Duthie, The speaker urged everyone to; carry on with the good work.and hoped they would derive the same pleasure. .
Dancing was carried on until midnight, finishing up with “Auld Lang Syne. ’ ’
Prior to dispersing Mr. Jackson thanked the musicians, thoso who had rendered items and all who had assisted with .the function.
