Serious Erosion in Waitaki River

MINISTER VISITS SCENE Per Press Association. OAMARU, Last Night. The serious position arising through the erosion of the south bank of tho Waitaki river above tho Waitaki bridge caused by floods in the river, engaged tho attention of Mr R. Semple (Minister of Public Works) on his way south to Dunedin to-day. Mrs Semple, Mr Wood (deputy-chief engineer of tho department), Mr T. M. Bail (district engineer), and Rev. A. H. Nordmeyer, M.P. In his recent inspection of the locality Mr Ball was impressed with the real danger existing through the river not only eating away good land but also taking a new courso that iu flood might break through the bauk at tho south end of the bridge and cut off road and rail communication.

After an inspection of the river this afternoon Mr Semple said he was impressed with tho urgency of the matter and instructed his officers to make a survey of tho position without delay, with a view to commencing protective works ou the river bank.
