Greek Shepherd’s Success in Big Handicap

FRIESLAND’S SPRINT KARL BEATS JUVENILES (Special to “Times.”) The second day’s racing was held at Trentham in fino weather before a good crowd. Tho going was excellent. Greek Shepherd won tho chief event easily, "giving an impressive performance, and other important victories were those of Friesland and Karl. The inquiry into the fatal fall of Gay Chief, on Saturday was again adjourned, this time till .to-morrow. Another to Entheos Entheos won the Rimu Highweight Handicap more easily than ho had won tho similar class event on tho opening day. Brown Pearl, Nightlass, and Peter's Ponce set a fast pace and led past the mile post from a struugout field, at the head of which was Earl Colossus. Crossing the top Brown Pearl and Peter’s Penco still led, with Nightlass, Earl Colossus and Royal Papa next, Entheos moving up and Summerhill last. The leaders gave way soon after turning for home, and Entheos ran to tho front. He held off Blue Tiger to win nicely, while Earl Colossus finished well enough to cut Blue Tiger out of second money. Royal Papa was next, then Brown Pearl, Summerhill and Grand Blow in line. Forms Works Out Form worked out satisfactorily when Le Grand, who had run second on Saturday, -won the Totara Maiden Stakes. Ho was favourite at a short price. Martial Lady, Alloa, Black Frost ami Night Spi wero prominent early. Alloa was lengths clear at the false rail, where Le Grand had come through. Le Grand,finished best ,t° win 0y half a length from Alloa, who was two lengths- dear-of' Toper, while Martial Lady, Diamond, Camilla Horn and Ayresleigh were next. Alloa showed great speed and should win soon. Night Spi had a bad run..A) A Good Finish all tho way, Big Dook won the Kongotai Handicap in good style, and paid a fair price. Hunting Lodge, and Variant made the running to the straight from Big Dook, After Money and Sunee. A fine finish ensued, in which Big Dook prevailed by a length and a-half from Variant. Fracas finished from last to take third place just ahead of Sunee. Next wero Hunting Lodge, After Money and Gay Boy. Fracas -'and Sunee finished well. Full Throttle ran badly and finished Favourite Fails Laughing Lass was backed to favouritism in the Karitane Handicap, but after being one of the leaders on to tho course proper she failed to run on and was beaten out of a place. Karl, who accompanied Laughing Lass in the early running, finished well enough to win by a length and a-half from Deficit, who finished very fast to beat Wagner by a neck for second place. Pelmet was a close fourth, •Double Gift and Moquette were next, and there was a big gap to the others. Three-Year-Old Scores The pace was slow in the early part of the race for the Autumn Handicap, but along the back Greek Shepherd went tb* the front and he led nearing [the straight from Hunting Cat, Queen [of Song, Argentic, ' Happy Landing, [Senior, Tunneller, Might, Korero and Arctic King. Argentic challenged Greek Shepherd in tho run home, but tho three-year-old was too good and won very easily by a length and ahalf, with Queen of Song a length and a-half away. Hunting Cat was fourth and the order of tho best of the others was Tunneller, Arctic King and Might. Seventh oa End Pakanui won his seventh race on end when ho just beat Chief Ranger in the Tasman Handicap. Hunting Mars and Vinco led Chief Ranger and Pakanui to the straight with Sansfoy next. Chief Ranger was hard at it down the straight to beat Hunting Mars, when Pakanui came at him with aa irresistible run and beat him by a neck. Hunting Mars was a neck away third and Shy, Rival Shot, Vinco and Sansfoy were next. Friesland Gets Home Friesland ran right up to his best form to win the March Handicap. Beau Gallante was three lengths clear of Rereatu, Jubilee Song, Haut Monde and Prostration entering the straight. Patiently ridden, Rereatu got to the front in the last half-furlong, but Friesland staged an excellent run and beat him by a neck. Silver Streak, who secured third money, was four lengths away. • Beau Gallante was fourth, then Haut Monde and Prostration. Friesland was ridden by W. J. Broughton, whose first success this was since ho- resumed riding recently, Erua’s Good Win Erua won the Belmont Handicap decisively after having to drop back a little at the three furlongs. Nearing the straight Dungarvan, Debham, Geitel, Ponty, Royal" Banquet, and Erua was the order. Erua got clear in the straight and won well by half a length from Dungarvan, with Maino a good third, then Ponty, Darecourt, Debham and The Image.
