Women's Institutes

MAKINO. Tho annual meeting was a very happy function, especially when tho president, Mrs J. Mason, was returned to her fourth year of oflice as president. As the number nominated for the committee did not exceed the maximum, no ballot was held, and the following ladies were elected for the ■ ensuing year:—President, Mrs J. Mason; vicepresidents, Mesdames Mayhcw, P. E. Gimpsou, and W. Baker; committee, Mesdames J. Mason, Mayhew,' Baker, Simpson, Petty, Moray, Eaydeu, Wilkinson, Sandbrook, Wilton, Thurston, Guthrie, Miss Smith. Mesdames Petty and Guthrie were elected as delegates to attend the half-yearly council meeting in Palmerston North. The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were most interesting, both being adopted, and carried with acclamation. Thanks were tendered to the outgoing committee for their excellent work -and interest, and to Mr G. McLeod, who very kindly audited the institute’s books. Mrs P. E. Simpson 'was again elected as chairwoman of the sub-committee. Miss E. Thurston, “Home and Country”; Mrs Vautier, Press correspondent; Mesdames Pearson and Lang, stall stewards; and Miss B. Thurston, competition steward. Mrs Mayhew presented the report of tho drama circle and also outlined some further ideas for the new year. Mrs Hcaynes was proposed as a new member and heartily welcomed. Mrs V. Eeid was tho winner of the senior competition, with Mrs Thurston second, and Miss B. Thurston and Miss E, Thurston gained first and second places for tho best wholemeal scones. There will not be a competition for the seniors next month. Tho junior competition is for the best table centre worked in wool. The president made a presentation to tho secretary, and thanked her for working the institute banner. Hostesses for April are Mesdames G. McLeod, Patersou, Prouse and M.iss Peterson.
