Riot and Flame in Spain
CHURCHES AND CONVENTS ATTACKED AND BURNT
United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyrlgh t. Received Sunday, 9.20 p.m. MADRID, March 14. Rioters set fire to the church of San Ignacio, many vauiable paintings and sculptures being destroyed. Firemen fought desperately to prevent the flames spreading to the Puerta del Sol. The police were greeted with a had of bullets. The shock guard shot and w'ounded two of the rioters who set lire to the San Ignacio Convent, which was soon a macs of flames. The nuns saved the nunnery at Santa Isabella from destruction. A mob attempted to set fire to the office of the catholic newspaper El Debate, but the guards inside repulsed them with rifle fire. All is quiet now. Jose de Rivera, the former dictator’s son, and other members of the Fascist board of directors, including the famous airman, Julio Ruizalda, have been arrested for belonging to an illegal body.
