Rev. R. R. Grant Sutherland, of London, is staying in Hukanui as tho guest uf Mr and Mrs F. Lemberg. Miss M. .Dougherty has returned to Hukauui after two weeks’ holiday in Danlievirke. Mrs Rice, of Tauinarunui lias returned to her home after spending a holiday with her sister Mrs H. Palmer. Sunday School Picnic,
Last Saturday, the day chosen for the Hukanui Sunday school picnic, was very summery and warm. The river was well patronised, swimming taking up a good part of the afternoon. The races resulted as follow; Girls races.—B and under, Margaret Sutherland 1, Fay Sunnex 2; a and under, Dorothy AVenham 1; 11 and under, Marjory AVenham 1, Ethel Lemberg; 14 and under, Katherine Lemberg 1, Margaret Tolley 2. Boys’ races.—l 4 and under, Alan Mabey 1, Basil Sutherland 2; 11 and under, Alvin Sunnex 1, Lance Mabey 2; 8 and under, Lyn Murray 1, Freddie White 2; o' and under, Jack AVenham 1, Jack Mabey 2; girls’ sa-jk race, June AVenham 1, Zita Udy 2; boys’ sack race, Kelvin Udy 1. Desmond Udy 2; girls’ skipping race, Jessie Lemberg 1, June Wenham 2; girls’ three-legged, Isa McDowall and Betty Tolley 1, Margaret Tolley and Ethel Lemberg 2: boys’ threelegged, Jack Goodin and Colin Sutherland I, Henry Lemberg and Des Udy tie with Cecil Udy and Busil Sutherland 2; obstacle race, Bernard Dougherty 1, Alan Mabey 2, Basil Sutherland 3: men’s chain stepping, Doug Udy 1, Ronald T. Udy 2; ladies’ chain stepping, Mrs Palmer 1, Miss J. Gardiner 2; single men’s race, Harold Udy 1, W. Twcntyman 2; single ladies’ race, E. AVenham 1, A. R. Laurence 2; married men’s race, N. Goodin 1, G. Sunnex 2. Mr Jones gave a. detailed account of tho year’s work and expenditure, and also thanked Mrs R. T. Udy for past services and Misses R. Eddie, A. It. Laurence, J. Gardiner and E. AVenham for present services. Alan Mabey, Laurel Mabey and Jack Mabey were loudly applauded when it was stated they had not missed a Sunday this past year. Tennis Dance.
On Saturday, February 22. a most enjoyable tennis dance was held in th« Hukanui Hall. Mr A. F. Laurence supplied music from gramophone and wireloss combined. He and the lion- secretary (Miss J. Booth) had a splendid programme arranged. After supper, a small presentation was made bv Mr A. F. Laurence, the president of the club, to Mrs J. Grant, who is leaving the district. She has been a staunch supporter and member of the club for years. Mrs Grant suitably responded and was accorded musical honours.
The cake which was being raffled bj the tennis club (baked by Mrs Voss ant iced by Miss Ada Laurence) was won bj Mrs A. Laurence. The winners of the Monte Carlo waltz were Mr J. Dougherty and Miss P. Jordan. Tennis.
Ladder match results are as follow.— Men: A. F. Laurence lost to AV. Twentyman 5—6; C. Laurence lost to AV. Hirsl 0—8; AV. Hirst lost to R. AV. Foss 2—«. Ladies: Mrs Grant lost to M. Gray o—6. A. R. Laurence defeated J. Booth 6—4.
