Women's Institutes

HAMUA. The first meeting of the year of the Hamua Women’s institute was held in the Public Hall and presided over by Mrs Hobbs. After the singing of the Ode to Friendship, the president read the Aspirations. The business disposed of, Mra Hobbs warmly welcomed Mesdames Harrington and Watkins, from Hukanui. The former gave a very interesting demonstration of Italian quilting, exhibiting several beautifully-finished articles. Mrs Harrington was heartily thanked for her demonstration. The points competition—three pikelets —was won by Mrs W. J. Smith, with Mrs Davies second. This competition was judged by Mesdames Harrington and Watkins. Mrs Galvin proved the winner of a novel competition arranged by Mrs K. J. Smith. Nominations for the election of officers for the ensuing year are to close on the 28th inst. Afternoon tea w r as served by the hostesses, Mrs and the Misses Davies. The singing of the National Anthem closed the meeting. KONINI. The monthly meeting of the Koninl Women’s Institute was held on Thursday the 13th. There was a fair attendance ol members present and the president, Mrs Hirst, was in the chair. After reading the motto, ‘‘A Good Beginning is Half the Battle,” the president asked members tu stand in silence for a moment in memory of the late Mr Brown. Nominations were taken for next year s committee and a competition, decided for the March meeting (plate of four kinds of sweets). This month’s competition, a jam jar of fiowers, was won by Mrs Hirst, Mrs Groves being second. The competition was judged by Miss Boss and Miss McCardle. The rest of the afternoon was spent in games and singing The hostesses (Mesdames Connell and Miller) served a dainty afternoon tea, after which the National Anthem was sung, Miss E. Miller kindly supplying the music.
