Economics of Dairy Production
INVESTIGATORS’ REPORT EXPECTED NEXT WEEK. Towards the end of last year a conference of delegates of dairy companies operating in the Manawatu and Horowhenua districts from Paraparaumu to Taihape was called with the object of arriving at more economical methods of working the industry. Members of the Executive Commission of Agriculture were also present and it was decided that two accountants familiar with dairy factory operations should make an economic survey and bring doWn a report. Tho “Times” learned yesterday that this report is expected in some time next week or very soon after when a further conference will be called to hear what recommendations are being made. The investigators were instructed to pay particular attention to such problems as overlapping, running costs and possibility of amalgamation of adjacent factories. In a letter to the Manawatu and West Coast Dairy Companies’ Association, the reasons for the delay in forwarding the report of the experts are set out by the secretary of the Executive Commission of Agriculture. “The Commission -met difficulty, owing to a number of tho companies concerned either refusing or giving only a qualified consent to the publication in the report of information respecting their companies,” stated the letter. “You will appreciate that if the refusals of certain companies were to be sustained the whole scheme of the report would be affected. This was viewed as being a serious matter, and negotiations were entered into to obtain the consent of all the companies. This caused considerable delay, and only a few days before February 15 the Commission obtained the consent of the last outstanding company. “The draft of the report is now completed, and it is being checked over by all the members of the Commission and the associated members of the Dairy Board. .Every effort is being made to expedite the issue of tho report to you, and it is thought that to enablo you to have sufficient copies the report will probably have to be printed. It is hoped that you will appreciate tho position as outlined, and make any necessary explanation to the companies which are inquiring about the report.”
