Smithy Turned Down Tempting Offer
TO CARRY WAR PICTURES TO LONDON. United Press Association —By Electric 'i Telegraph.—Copyright. \ Received Friday, 2 a.m. LONDON, Feb. 20. B. Sheil who was personal assistant to Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, in a broadcast address tonight, related that Smithy, not before his last tragic flight, rejetted a tempting offer to carry photographs of the Abyssinian war to London for a big newspaper syndicate there. Mr Sheil said the syndicate offered Smithy £B,OOO for his machine and a big salary if he would personally fly his ’plane on its behalf for six months. Smithy felt, however, that acceptance of the offer would be unwise because of the -feeling in regard to the Abyssinian situation and especially because he held a high rank in the Royal Australian Air Force.
