Bathing Fatality

RARATONGA DENTIST DROWNED. UniLed Press Association—Bv EleeLric Telegraph.—Copyright. RARATONGA, Jan. 7. A fatality occurred at ltarutonga yesterday involving the death of Charles Owen Hodgins, dentist, while bathing uff Avarua wharf.

A heavy sea was running at the time und there was a considerable undertow. The hurricane last February somewhat altered the contour of the coast in the vicinity of the harbour, with tho result that in heavy seas there is a very pronounced tide rip and a strong current out to sea.

An inquest has not yet been held, but the theory is that the victim was overcome by the strength of the seas and collapsed through heart failure. Efforts were made to resuscitate Mr Hodgins, but without avail.

The funeral took place this morning and was largely attended by all sections of the community, both European and native, as a mark of esteem. Mr Hodgins leaves a wife and young family.
