Pairs Section Started at Bowls Tourney

New South Wales Party Makes its Appearance

Post-section Play This Afternoon im+Wt c»v. Psr Press Association.

CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night.

The first three rounds of the pairs championship in the New Zealand Bowling Association's tournament were played to-day. . Two further rounds will be played to-morrow morning, and after they are completed, the post-sectionai play will be begun. The greens were in good condition until late in the afternoon, when a sudden shower of rain deadened them and on some greens caused a slight halt in play, in the third round. Most interest for the day was taken in the appearance of the party of bowlers from New South Wales, who made their first appearance in the tournament. At a slight disadvantage in their first games on unfamiliar greens, the visiting pairs did fairly well. Some of them suffered early defeats, but their style of play impressed the spectators. One of the pairs playing at St. Albans, A. E. Packer and W. Law (skip), had comfortable wins in the first two Tounds. H. C. Alloo, from Owaka, who distinguished himself on Tuesday by being the only singles player to come through the post-sectional play with two lives in hand, had his first defeat of the tournament playing at Papanui. J. Nicholson and J. Anderson (skip), of Timaru, beat E. G. Dale and Alloo (skip), 18—14, after an interesting game. , . tt n Although last year's winners, H. tt. Loveridge and R. N. Pilkington (skip), of Hamilton, are not their title, there are many competing in the pairs who have had successes in former tournaments. W. Bremner and C. E. Hardley (West End, Auckland), who won the pairs in 1932, are again competing. They suffered a loss in the first round to T. Quirk and J. J. Kennerley (skip), Spreydon, but won their second round game. _ , Two members of the West Harbour Club (Dunedin), Veitch and McPherson, who won the title two years ago, are again in the pairs in 1936, but they nre not playing in the same pair. G. L. Gladding, a member of the winning pair in 1930, and Maxwell Walker, w ho skipped the first pair in 1927, are not this year in the pairs, but both will make reappearance in the rinks, 'which will begin on Friday.
