From Our Own Correspondent. Mr J. Linklater Speaks. Mr J. Llnklatei’, National candidato for Manawatu, spoke to a good attendance of electox-s at Opiki on Monday evening. Mr T. D. Lynch, of Linton, was in tho chair. Mr I.tnklater explained the work of the Government, during the past four years and outlined its proposals for tlxo future. He was accorded an attentive hearing and at the conclusion of his address, a hearty vote of thanks on the motion of Mr G. Allwright. - Women’s Institute. The monthly, meeting of. the Opiki Women's Institute' was held oh November 20. ' Mrs V. Claridgo presided over an attendance of 26 members. . The meeting agreed that ill’s E. Kelso, Dominion organiser of the Women’s Institute, should represent the movement at the PanPacifie conference in America shortly. It was decided that the Christmas tree party for the children, bo, hold on the evening of December 13. Thanks were extended to all those who had assisted! with the recent W.I. dance. Tho trea-1 surer reported that , the profits, of this function wei’o £2 5s lid. A report of tho recent - Manawhenua group committee! meeting was read by Miss.M..Cooper. The; next gathering of the group wili.be held I at Kop'utaroa on February 21. Ihakara members will act as hostesses and an at-j tractive programme has been arranged, in- | eluding a mannequin parade, a talk on subjects-of interest to women, and a number of plays. A small W.I. baby, James Edward Robert Pilgrim, was handed a bank book with the hope that he would have a prosperous future. Mrs Angus spoke on women’s place in tho world, and monetary reform. Opui road members contributed tho entertainment
part of tho programme. Miss C. Cooksley played mandolin solos and Mrs W. Jackson told Scottish stories. The competition for the best waggon-cloths l’es'ulted: ■ Miss M. Coopor 1 and 3, Mrs E. Henderson 2. This was judged hy Mrs Angus and there were a largo number of entries. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdamps Gregory,.’!, Mubey, J. Percy and-J.- Hansen. A W.I. calendar is'to be sent to tho Scottish link in Dunbog, Fife, for tho. New Year. Personal. Mrs G.
