Clergymen on Local Bodies

SHOULD THEY RESIGN THEIR MINISTERIAL OFFICE? DUNEDIN, Last Night. Whether clergymen occupying seats on public bodies or iu Parliament should be allowed to continue their ministerial - duties was a question again brought up at tho concluding aes' t of the annual Synod of the OtagoSouthland District Methodist Church to-day. The recommendation of the committee set up at the 1935 conference was to the effect that a minister may not hold such positions without the consent of his own local church and certain eonnexional committees. A Dunedin lay member of the synod, Mr R. M. Yanes, vigorously opposed the recommendation and moved an amendment in the direction of entirely withholding the church’s consent to a minister holding such a dual position, contending that in such circumstances the Minister shout'd tender his rc"gnation. Rev. L. B. Neale moved a further amendment in reaffirmation of the 1934 conference resolution, providing that no minister consent to nomination for civic office entailing service likely to conflict with his ministerial work without approval of his quarterly meeting and of the president of the conference and a committee of advice.

Mr Neale's amendment was carried and Mr Vane’s defeated, the original motion being withdrawn.
