From Our Own Correspondent. Tho friends of Mr A. Bennett of Rangitlkei line will bo pleased to hear that ho is progressing favourably after hts operation in a private hospital in Palmerston North. Congratulations to Roger Morris who topped the poll in his class in tho Plunket photo competitions. Mrs A. K. Simpson has had as her guest Mrs Brookcr of Eltham and Miss Brooker of Milson. Mr J. Linklater, M.P., Mrs Linklater and Misses R. and G. Linklater are at prosent at Foxton beach which will be Mr Linkiater's headquarters until after the general election. Mr and Mrs W. G, Shannon had as their guests for the Palmerston North Spring Show Miss Gladys Hall, ICimbolton, Mr Horn of Ohau, Mr Glmblett of Hustings and Mr Winter Stringfeiiow of Carterton. Miss Ina Lord, of Napier, is at present staying with her aunt, Mrs Shaw, for a fow days. Mr and Mrs G. M. Whitelock’s little son had the misfortune to fall off his bicycle and break Ills leg somo time back, but he is making satisfactory' progress. Mr G. M, Whiteloclc is at present attending tho Hawera Show whore He is an exhibitor. Best wishes for his continued success,
Hearty congratulations to the following Newbury settlers on their successes at the recent Palmorston North Spring Show: Mr G. M. Whitelock. who secured many brats and championships with his fine pigs; Mr R. Webb, who secured many prizes Including firsts; Mr W. G. Shannon for horses, two firsts and a third; Mr J. Knight for sheep; Mrs J. Lancester for cooking, one first, two seconds (three entries); Mrs W. G. Shannon who secured the first prize for the best piece of fancywork in the Show.
The November committee meeting of tho Newbury Women’s Institute was hold last Wednesday afternoon, Mrs Shaw presiding. Apologies for absence were received from Mosdames J. Cheetham, S. Death, J, Linklater, C. Pavno, A, K. Simpson and Miss M. Linklater. An invitation to tho Sanson Women’s Institute birthday and also one from the Kalrangn Institute, inviting our members to a visitors’ afternoon on November 10, were recoivod. Evoryone is asked to enter into tho different competitions. At the close of tho meeting aftornoon tea was served. Tho parents’ association and the Newbury school committee Held a combined meeting on Monday evening when there was a good attendance. Mrs E. Shaw presided. Tho balance sheet of tho last social and dance showed a very good credit. It was Intended to hold tho annual meeting of tho parents’ association, but after somo discussion it was decided to carry on for another term pending tho doclsion of the Wanganui Education Board regarding the closing of the Newbury school. A meeting of Settlers is to be hold shortly to meet the membors of tho Education Board when every householder should attend. Every settler in the district will bo very sorry indeed to seo our school closed.
