Quarterly Sittings of Supreme Court Open
THREE CRIMINAL CASES FOR TRIAL With three criminal cases for trial and civil business that is expected to last into the third week, the quarterlysittings of the Supreme Court at Palmerston North opened yesterday before' Hon. Mr. Justice Smith. The following grand jury was empanelled: Messrs L. 11. Collinson, T. B. Arlidge, W. B. Cameron, F. W. Coombs, J. E. L. Gardner, N. D. Stubbs, F. G. Major, J. Blackwood, D. H. Browning, V. B. Cook, J. Davidson, 11. Dickie, H. E. Edmunds, D. Fraser, W. 11. Knight. ,T. G. Lockwood and L. G. Reiger. “There are only three indictments for your consideration,” said his Honour in his charge to the grand jury. One, he proceeded, was tho usual type of tlici't and receiving, but the other two wero unusual. One of them related to the placing of an obstruction on tho railway line, whereby the railcar used by the general manager of railways might have been derailed. The other related to an unusual charge of assault iu connection with incidents whereby a man fired a shot which hit his wife.
True bills were returned by the grand jury in all three criminal cases. The first was that in which Manly Symes was charged: (1) That, on July 24, at To Matai, with intend to do grievous bodily harm to Sylvester Charles'William Campbell, he did actual bodily harm to Mrs. 'Elsie Elizabeth Symes; (2) that he did assault Mrs. Symes so as to cause her actual bodily harm; (3) that he did cause actual bodily harm to Mrs. Symes under such circumstances .that if death had been caused, tho accused would have bceu guilty of manslaughter; (4) that he did assault Mrs.- Symes.
The second case was that in which Mathew George Matson was charged: (lj That, on October 3, he did steal articles valued at £l4 14s from tho dwelling house of George Francis Dewhirst; (2) that he did receive articles valued at £9, before then stolen, and at the time well, knowing them to have been dishonestly obtained. The third case was that in which lan Bruce Cossar-Millcr was indicted on alternative charges of placing an obstruction on a railway line.
