i’roni Our Own Correspondent Gift Evening.
A recently married young couple, All-, and Mrs L. Paterson, were happily entertained on Thursday evening by 80 of their friends. -Musical games and competitions wore arranged by Mr and Airs K. I’atchett and Aiesdaiues T. H. Purnell and \\. R. Prat L who organised the party. Airs L. Paterson was presented by Ellery Waterson and Muriel i’rujeau with a dainty posy of tinted wallliowers and polyanthus, the artistic work of Airs John Jensen. Airs T. M. Purnell eulogised the guests of the evening, particularly mentioning Airs Paterson, who as Miss Myrtle Digby, has been a stalwart supporter and always willing worker in the interests of the Apiti Alethodist Church. Un bebah of the Alethodist congregation Airs Purnell asked Airs Paterson to accept an oak tea waggon and with it the very best wishes for her future happiness. Air R. Patchett endorsed the remarks of the previous speaker and calied oil Air and -Mrs. Paterson to open the collection of parcels brought by their friends. -Musical honours were accorded the young couple. Air L. Martin replied expressing the thanks of his wife and himself to their many friends. Supper was handed around, but those preparing it had an unpleasant experience, for when lighting the copper they were smoked out of the kitchen. After some delay a starling’s nest was removed from the chimney, and the copper boiled without further trouble, enabling those who suffered streaming eyes and choky throats to enjoy tlie remainder of the evening. All- It. Patchett was the M.C. Airs James Martin sang and responded to an encore. -Master Ken White, a young visitor, from Carterton, delighted those present with his two recitations.
Meeting of Electors. Air Bill Olliver, of Feilding, tho Labour candidate for the Oroua seat, addressed local electors on Friday night. Air, Win. McKay was voted to tlie chair. Thu speaker, who was given an attentive hearing, outlined the policy of the Labour party and made many references to tho Douglas Social Credit monetary system of which he seems a keen supporter. Many questions were asked and tho speaker had a ready answer to each. Mr. A. F Stewart moved a vote of thanks to Mr. Oliver for his address, this being carried.
Personal. Staying at Mar ton Block with Airs. T. H. Purnell is her aunt, Airs. Tayer, and her cousin, -Miss Smith, both of Carterton. -Mr. Osborne, of the Presbyterian Social Service Association, Wellington, is. during his visit to tho Opiki Home Alissior. district, the guest of Rev. and Airs, A F. Stewart at the Manse.
Tennis Club. Unsettled weather conditions on Saturday morning -were responsible for the postponement of the opening of the Apiti Tennis Club. Later in the day the weather improved but, tho need to notify other district clubs necessitated an early morning decision by the local committee.
