From Our Own Correspondent, School Committee.
Tho monthly meeting of the Shannon school committee waso held on Tuesday evening, there being present Messrs H. ii. blest (chairman}, j. V. Campbell (secretary}, V.\ Christian, W. Hartford, D. Cole, hi. Venlry-Smith and the headmaster (Mr Mclionuid). Apologies t'or absence were received irom Messrs J. Bovis, Aor man and Harpur. It was decided to ask-the board to erect a now saddle shed in the horse paddock. A donation of £l2 2s was made to tho health camp funds. Tile headmaster reported that the .attendance was 305, It was decided to install drinking fountains at the school, The question of a swimming bath again came up for discussion and Messrs Best anu Campbell were appointed to represent the school committee at the next meeting oi the bath committee- Ground improvements were discussed and provision made for a practice tennis court, Mr Cole kindly offered to supply a practice net. Bowiing Club.
At a general meeting of the bowling club held on Thursday evening it was decided to open the season on Saturday, October 26 at 2 pirn. Several new members were eiected, and the president, Mr H. Blaikie, reported that the special committee set up for the purpose, had negotiated! With the howling company for tile purchase of its property, and ho was pieased to say that satisfactory arrangements had been made whereby the land, buildings and equipment would now belong to tlio bowling club. The club endorsed the action of the committee anu congratulated the president on. the good work he had done in the matter. Tennis.
The opening of tiio tennis club was held in gloriously lino weather on Saturday. There was an uiiusually large attendance of members and visitors. The courts presented a gay appearance and indications are for a good season. Mr Thurston, the president, said how pleased he was to see so many present, especially the visitors whom he thanked for attending. He wished to thank all those who had assisted at tho woiking bees, „ and the ladies for providing and dispensing afternoon tea. Ho then called upon Mrs V. i’opo to play the first ball. Jn the evening a dance w;q> held and whs a great success socially and financially.' Many of tin.visiting tennis players stayed for the dance. A professional orchestra supplied tlio music, while Mr J. Boris acted as M.C. A Monte Carlo was won by Mi T. Exton and partner. Tho competition for the box of chocolates was won by Mi K. Wilson. Supper was supplied by members of tho tennis club. Croquet Card Party. There was a good attendance at the iinal card party hold under the auspices of the croquet club. Prizes were won by Mrs I'ieurd J, Mrs Tremewau 2, Mrs Seeerd, bouquet of Powers., The points prizes for tho season were won by. Visitors, Mrs Bel), donated by Mrs Blaikie; croquet players, Mrs B. J. Braun, doiuU.ee by Mrs Bovis. Bouquets were made and presented by Mi s Liiokoff to the retiring president, Mrs Blaikie and to tne president, M.rs Bovis. fill's Blaikie thanked al. those present for their patronage during the winter and said she felt sure they were sorry that the card parties had linisht'd. She extended a hearty invitation to all to be present at the opening of tlio croquet season on Saturday, 26tli.
Personal. Mr Bareell's friends Will be pleased to hear that ho is reported to be progressing satisfactorily after having to re-enter hospital lor treatment. Miss ilenncssy, of Wellington, is the guest of her brother and sister-in-law, Mr and Mrs J. iiennessy, East road. Mr .1. Ilallam, .Stout street, has returned from a holiday trip to Itarotonga.
